How to Become a CIA Agent

CIA Agents work to achieve the Central Intelligence Agency’s mission of collecting, evaluating, and disseminating foreign intelligence to assist the president in making decisions regarding national security. CIA agents can come from a variety of different educational backgrounds. Scientists, engineers, economists, linguists, mathematicians, secretaries, accountants and computer specialists are some of the individuals that make up the CIA.

CIA agents are responsible for identifying and collecting information about a problem or an issue of national security concerning the United States Government. This information is sometimes found by:

  • Translating foreign news broadcasts and newspapers
  • Taking pictures from space with imagery satellites
  • Decrypting coded messages from other countries
  • And many other ways!

Government policy makers use the information reported by the CIA to make decisions regarding national security. CIA agents are only reporters of information, and they do not make any policy recommendations.

CIA Agent Education Requirements

To become a CIA agent, even at the entry level, you will at least need a bachelor’s degree. Overseas officers, intelligence agents, and other non-clerical positions require even higher degrees of education, such as a master’s degree. Popular degree majors include:

It is also necessary for CIA agent applicants to have a high GPA (greater than 3.0), a clean health and background check, be a United States citizen, and be under 35 years of age. Fluency in another language would be incredibly useful in a CIA agent position.

Job Outlook for CIA Agents

The CIA agent job market is highly competitive, and the application process is long and complex. Although CIA agent salaries are not disclosed to the public, it is generally assumed that CIA agents start at salaries between $30,000 and $60,000 a year. Salaries will reflect position held, years of experience, and level of education attained.
