Public Administration Degrees

Public administration covers a wide range of areas of study and career opportunities. As defined by the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), public administration workers focus on solving societal problems. These types of problems can vary widely in type, but would include anything from how to provide quality health and daycare to children living in poverty, to how to secure the United States against chemical, biological, and nuclear terrorism.

Most job opportunities in public administration require specialized skills, training, and a college degree of some sort. Public administration degrees are offered all across the United States and at many different levels.

Types of Public Administration Degree Programs

An associate’s degree in public administration is a two year course of study which provides students with a basic overview of the principles of the field. Associate’s degree holders generally go on to earn higher level degrees if they intend to develop a career in public administration, but they are qualified to fill some entry level positions.

A bachelor’s degree in public administration is a four year program. Courses of study are often related to specific public issues such as health care, safety, or the environment. A bachelor’s degree in public administration prepares the graduate to work effectively in government, politics, and public policy. Job opportunities for graduates might include, but are not limited to, urban planner, city manager, and various positions in homeland security.

A master’s degree in public administration (MPA) is recommended for those who seek to hold management and leadership positions in public administration. At the master’s level, analytical and practical skills are acquired. Good decision making skills, risk analysis, and communication skills are also heavily stressed. Job positions for those acquiring their master’s degree in public administration might include lobbyist, policy analyst, budget analyst, and program director among others.

Doctorate programs in public administration prepare students to become experts in research methods and theory. It’s at this level that careful analysis, measurement, and theory are tested to solve some of the greater issues in society. Job opportunities at this level include researchers, policy advisors, and university professors among others.

Job Outlook for Public Administration Graduates

The Bureau of Labor Statistics views the job outlook for those in public administration as better than average and with competitive salaries.
