Police Science

Police Science Degrees

Police science involves much more today than it did in the past. The role of police officers has adapted to meet the increasing demands of homeland security. With climbing crime rates and fear of terrorist attacks on the rise, law enforcement workers have more responsibilities. They are also required to be highly educated, very knowledgeable, and have a plentitude of technological skills. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is now a higher demand for college educated law enforcement officials than ever before.

Police science degree programs equip police officers with the knowledge and skills needed to deal with modern day criminal justice issues. Graduates of these programs learn to use detection and investigation skills to prevent crime and promote justice effectively. Coursework generally includes a detailed look at criminal procedures, crime scene investigation, fingerprint analysis, profiling, constitutional law, and terrorism assessment. With increasing instances of cyber crime, many police science degree programs are also including courses in fraud detection, identity theft, and computer security.

Job Opportunities for Police Science Graduates

Many police science degree program graduates find work in law enforcement agencies. Other possible employment opportunities would include corrections officers, parole officers, private investigators, and bounty hunters among others. Those wishing to advance their education and go on to law school could also find work as criminal prosecutors or private attorneys.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for those with a police science degree is good. There will be, however, a great deal of competition for the more challenging jobs at the state and federal levels. Having a higher level of education will put you ahead of your competition when applying for jobs within the law enforcement industry.
